Default Clutch problem now, what have I got myself into ?

Just been driving back from town in my 2.5 TD '97 Jeep Cherokee, stopped at the lights clutch down, out of gear released the pedal then went to engage first, depressed clutch pedal, "thunk" noise, no clutch , got towed home by my cousin in his Rav 4 so now I have a dead Jeep clutch, no manual so I don't have a prayer of fixing it, don't even know if its a hydralic or cable clutch.

Can anyone shed any light on it please, proper fed up !

It's probably hydraulic there should be a resavoir on Driverside on firewall I would check it to.see.if there is any fluid in it . Maybe be empty . I use dot3 brake fluid in mine . Hopefully this helps you out. I don't know much about clutches other than that . I'm sure somebody else can give you more info. Good luck

Thanks for the reply, I didn't even know that much ! on investigation it's a hydraulic clutch, tracing the pipes back from the pedal up to the resevoir and down to the gear box there seems to be no leaks, I can't get the lid off the resevoir to check the fluid level, it doesn't seem to unscrew and knowing me I'll bust it trying being a ham fisted lump !

This Forum is excellent loads of inspiration to jack and "monster" my new toy, the kids have named her "Black Bess"!

Can anyone tell me how the lid comes off the reservoir, it's a black plastic one but doesn't seem to unscrew ?

Sorry for all the newb questions hopefully once I've learnt a few things I'll be able to offer a bit of advice myself !

The cap should come off like a child-proof medicine bottle, push down and turn counter-clockwise.

Glad you found the problem. Mine is doing something too. I have to keep putting fluid in it. And no sight of a leak. I'm boggled

Highwater, have you taken the slave cylinder out to see if it could be leaking at the piston end and into the bell housing?
