well 289 K on 'Ol Red...same clutch flywheel assy. been pretty reliable to date. read on here some folks used a AX-15 fluid change ( Redline MT90) to alleviate gear synchro meshing and soft clutch pedal stuff.
my concerns......
wouldn't worn slave cylinder be symptomatic of the "soft" clutch pedal problem? or worn clutch plate?
Clutch questions:
1. with the hi miles on it, would it be advisable to replace the flywheel as well as the clutch assy kit?
2. On the 91 Sport (4.0L), is the flywheel FLAT faced or the concave machine one?
3. Is it the 164 tooth unit?
If someone has a good idea on these questions as to this year, let me know, thanks!
am gonna dig into the shop manual and the Haynes for further clarification.
cheers!

Likely the slave but would depend on if shifts are difficult or the truck tries to bump forward when shifting into first with the truck at a stand still. With those miles, I wouldn't be surprised if the pressure plate springs have taken a bit of a set.
Clutch questions:
1. with the hi miles on it, would it be advisable to replace the flywheel as well as the clutch assy kit? Depends on if it's be resurfaced and/or has damage to the starter teeth. I would just take it to a local engine shop and have it resurfaced. Usually ~ $30-$50
2. On the 91 Sport (4.0L), is the flywheel FLAT faced or the concave machine one? Couldn't tell ya, but I assure you the friction surface is flat.
3. Is it the 164 tooth unit? no clue.

s14unimog, Thanks very much for the info, any data helps in the decision making/eval of project.
Being as it is a 4x4,
Looks like i gotta get me a heavy floor jack (more cost, crap) make a tranny holding fixture, 3/4 plywood with small ratchet straps to "gently" slide transfer/trans out of its *home*. then use the other HD floor jack to keep the engine level.
Apparently with this many miles, am lookin at pilot bushing/bearing, re-surface/replace flywheel, clutch kit (new internal release bearing included) any particular MFG brand I should go with on the clutch kit???, I don't want to have to get under it again for this for another 200k if ya know what I mean. maybe a new/rebuilt clutch master cyl, or rebuild kit.
I may just get all the parts and have a shop do it, A:they have a lift, which makes things soooooo much easier. B: they have every tool needed to expedite the R & R process.
My place has an angled driveway, no garage, and I would have to buy extra tools I will only use maybe once in a blue moon....
Still researching, but winter coming on, don't like the fact she is getting harder and harder to put into first from dead stop. plus pedal is super, super soft when engaging.
Anyway, thanks for everything here guys (and gals)... will keep ya udated on this saga......
cheers!
