cluster swap compatibility
i have an 87 xj
can i swap the cluster for an 88 xj
would it just plug in like the old one

sweet, i want to ditch the dummy lights....any thing special ill need to hook up the speedo and can i change the odo to represent my actual milage

to make it a plug n play swap you need to make sure your cluster is from an 87 to 90, in 91 up they went from and cable drive speedo to an electrical. Also you need to change out the oil pressure switch to an oil pressure sender and the temp switch to and temp sender. You could try to find one with a tach to if you want. Thats the reason why i did the cluster swap was for an tach

also, for the temp and oil sender ill need to get, are those sensors the same wireing as the old switches or is new wireing neccesary

yes you can change the odometer to match your actual mileage.
the pre 91 clusters is simple, if you look at the odometer from the rear, you will see some small e-clips. remove those and you can change the mileage the same way you would change the numbers on an old bicycle lock. you need to pull the odo number wheel off to the side to get it off the little gear, then you can just spin it to whatever number you want, then slide it back on the little gear and do the next one.
i did this to mine when i changed my cluster.
it may be a little different than i described, but you'll figure it out. i didn't really pay attention to the steps i did when i did mine.
