I recently noticed there is a slight clunk when i shift from reverse to drive but not from park to drive or neutral to drive... is this normal?, my cherokee has the splicer auto tranny if that helps.

 

slight clunk is pretty normal. make sure your drive shaft u joints are good, and the trans mount is good, and you're fine. also could be worn out rign and pinion, but not likely.

if its a small clunk, its just the driveline shifting. the gears in the axle to the gears in the trans just all shifting momentum. from the trans to t case to axle there's a few gears going from one direction to another.

Mine did the same thing when id put it in gear itd clunk and kinda lunge a lil it was the drive shaft u-joint

 

mine has always had a slight clunk, but never anything too bad.

i had always assumed it was just a Jeep thing haha.

 

Check tranny/Engine mounts, U joint,Leaf spring bushing and last but not least if you have the cryco 8.25 it is a common find (dont ask me why) to find the pinion bearing worn out. causing slaping and clunking when loading the drivetrain.

 

1.) Worn U-joints
2.) Worn Ring and Pinion
3.) Rarely but, a broken rear axle degree shim was causing me a clunk.

 

make sure not to miss the engine mounts, they cause clunks and then trouble. trans mount could be soft. u-joints definitly check, heck they are so cheap dont check em, replace em....
