Cleared code P0420 and immediately crank/no start

Cleared code P0420 and immediately crank/no start
I have a 1996 Cherokee country and it threw a p0420 code. It had been starting right up, no issues. So I cleared the code and immediately after it cranked but would not start. I reset the ecu but still it would crank but not start.
Anyone deal with this before? Have any ideas?
