Anytime I clean an IAC, I just make sure to pull it off slowly so I don't crack the gasket. Other than that, there's nothing tricky. Just spray the hell out of it with some carb clean and clean it out.

Did you read the instructions that came with the IAC valve? You have to measure the distance from the TB mounting surface and the mounting surface on the IAC valve by holding the plunger (pintle) to the mounting surface of the TB and measuring the distance to the mounting surface of the IAC valve. The distance should be less than 1 1/8 inch if it measures more then that you must turn the pintle clockwise until you reach the desired measurement. If not you can damage the pintle or the valve as the pintle will want to over-travel its seat!

I haven't actually cleaned the IAC on my XJ yet, because it idles perfect. Every other IAC I ever cleaned had a gasket between it and the throttle body, so I figured the XJ would too. I could be wrong, though, especially since more than one person said they didn't have a gasket. My mistake.
