Class I trailer hitch
Would a class I trailer hitch, work for pulling a 24ft RV?
I know nothing about hitches, but I found one for cheap, that will fit my 99 XJ, and was wondering if maybe I need a class II or III?

For a 24 foot RV you need a class III hitch and something bigger than your Jeep to pull it. It will pull it but you will be riniging it's neck, especially on hills.
Darn it.. It was a good price lol..
My other vehicle is a 2000 Grand Marquie with a V8 in it. Think maybe it'll pull it better?

You'll need a class III, but how heavy is the trailer? An XJ 4.0L with auto is supposed to be able to tow up to 5000# with no more than 750# tongue weight, but requires the heavy duty cooling system and trans cooler. I've probably towed close to 3000# with mine, but was pretty careful. The brakes aren't exactly powerful, and anything over 3000# needs electric trailer brakes.
If the trailer only needs towed and parked once, why not ask a friend with a 4x4 pickup?

That's exactly what I would do if I knew anybody in the state lol..
It's pretty much just me and the wife, no family or friends to speak of.
Might just find somebody on Craigslist to move it for me for a couple hundred when we get ready. Hmmmm..
Now I got a lot more to think about

Thanks for your help.. Much appreciated.

A class III hitch can be quite handy. I've used mine for towing a utility trailer, my portable sawmill, have a bike rack that goes in the receiver, and have thought about one of those carriers that uses the same receiver. Too, the hitch ties both sides of the frame together and makes for a pretty stout recovery point.
You should be able to buy a new class III for $150 or less and they go on pretty easily. You'll need the wiring harness for the trailer lights, but you can get the modular variety that plugs into your existing harness behind the spare tire. Its an easy install and not $$, so you should have $200 or less in it if you do it yourself.
If you have no need to tow other than once, its probably not worth your time and $ to install.
