Is a Class 3 hitch going to be too big?
I was looking for a hitch, and when I was ordering it, the class 3 was only $10 more than a class 2, so I ordered a class 3.
When it arrived though, I think I may have overbought, it is a Curt, and it weighs nearly 40 pounds. I think I should have gone with a class 2, all i am pulling is a 14' fishing boat.
Will I have problems with the big class 3? Will it weigh me down, cause me to sag, etc?
Given that all i am going to pull is a small boat, would it be worth it to trade someone for a class 2?
I am just thinking I would like to save the weight back there, I don't like the fact that if I put this on, I will have 40 lbs of weight hanging off the back.

I can't see there being much of a weight difference between the class 2 and the class three, maybe 10 pounds? Ten extra pounds is worth being able to tow up to 5k pounds instead of 2500-3500 (can't rememeber class 2 weight limit). 40 pounds in not going to make you sag either. If springs were that sensative you'd already be sagging on the driver side front because I'm sure you weigh more than 40 pounds when you are sitting in the driver seat.

on the cherokee you have to remember the max towing capability (factory manual stated) is 3500lbs. with an auto/manual. so if you have a class 2 or a class 3 you will still only be able to tow up to 3500lbs. the only difference is that you either have a 2" receiver or a 1.25" receiver. I personally would stick with the 2" receiver of your class 3 hitch because if you wanted to have a hitch mounted bike rack or cargo rack or any hitch accessory having the 2" receiver gives you more options

I have a class 3 hitch and 100lb custom bumper (yes it needs a diet) and mine is just starting to sag mainly because of 200k miles worth of abuse. So 40lbs should be nothing

OK, thanks for the replies. I was mainly worried about added weight and having it getting in the way if/when I offroad, looks like I have nothing to worry about. THanks

The weight difference is worth it for the pounds you can tow, and with just the hitch on, there is not going to be any sag. I have had the same class 3 hitch on mine since 2002 and have hauled a bayliner and jet ski.
