I thought I asked this question here before but I can't find it.

2001 Jeep Cherokee : Every now and then - a lot of times when I am making a right hand turn over a speed bump - there is a clanging sound from the left rear - clang/clang/clang - like metal hitting metal. No one can find the source.

Any ideas appreciated.

 

Had the car in the shop and the mechanic who heard the noise I was interested in said he thinks it is the bushings in the 'Leaf Spring' which are shot and need to be replaced. Apparently those require a specialist to replace. Could that explain the clanging I am hearing ? And is there anything else in that area I should have replaced at the same time ?

I don't know if this is your clang, but on my Jeep, it's the bracket strap that holds the leaf pack together.

 

I just had BOTH leaf packs worked on today. They added a new leaf to each side. Less than $45 USD ! I don't think that is what the guy thought he was going to have to do when he quoted the job - but he wouldn't take any more money saying - we stand by our quotes.

 

So was it a broken leaf?

I needed the leaf work done - everyone agreed about that. But the shop I went to was less than a mile from the house - so I can't say that fixed my noise. I'll have a better idea tomorrow when I go for a longer drive. In any case - the work I had done today should rule out a lot of possibilities if the noise continues.

 

Wow does the Jeep handle differently now. We live in the world of speed bumps (they call them topas). There are very few traffic lights or even stop signs - just speed bumps to control the intersection. After the leaf pack work, the Jeep really HOPS over the bumps. If I take it too fast my head will hit the roof (do I now need to change to better rear shocks ?). I still haven't decided if this repair fixes my initial problem. It seems like my clang-clang-clang-clang has turned into a clang-clang.

 

Check your exhaust for play,especially in the rear.
