Well I talked with my brother ed who is a mechanic and he was saying the same thing so I'm tearing apart the distributor and sealing it to prevent this from happening again. if it does then I know that wasn't the problem.

Did you get this problem fixed? I have owned 7 XJ's for my work trucks.. and have always checked the evaporator can vacuum lines. when it has a hard start or chugging under load, I found that one of the lines coming across the firewall nearest the back of the valve cover was either cracked/split or had swollen and fell off. simple fix and everything was fine.
