Jeepsters,
I'm new to Jeeps and this forum.
Working on my son's 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport & I have a couple questions.
1) A Jeep Dealer told me it has a Chrysler 8.25" Rear Differential.
As this is a 1998, my internet searches lead me to believe that is should have a 29-spline differential? (it seems they were 27-spline up to 1996, then 97 & up are 29?).
I want to ensure this is the case, as I am searching for a new posi-traction "carrier" as the one that is in there is bad/needs replacing.
2) Also, I'm assuming that the rear end was an "Open Differential" originally (as that is the reason for someone having put in the "posi-traction carrier" that is in there, correct? I need to confirm that so as to buy the correct replacement carrier).
Appreciate any quick responses.

Yes you have a 29 spline axle.
If the limited slip is not working properly, all that's needed is a new set of clutch discs. These can be installed without removing the carrier from the axle.
Be sure to add a friction modifier when you refill the axle.

R u positive that what's in there is limited slip diff? If it's an "open" diff, there r several brands of aftermarket auto-locking diffs that install easily in about 2 hours and no special tools or ring/pinion set-up. We installed a PowerTrax No-Slip auto-locker about 4 years ago....been flawless the whole time.

Pop open the axle and look at the differential before you order anything. Limited slip was not standard, I can't tell from your post if you think you're trying to fix one or install a new one.

Did't think the Limited slip was even available for the 8.25.... Either way I would not WASTE money on either repairing or converting to stock style limited slip. Especially since an auitolocker will cost about the same or less and NOT require professional installation and setup.

You guys assume he has an LSD carrier. If the OP had to ask the dealer what kind of axle he has, how would he know if there's a limited slip in it? We don't even know what he's trying to accomplish or why lol
