Default Chip key

I just bought a jeep 2001. It was a repo. I got a key but I don't think it has the chip in it. Truck will start and run then die. How do I get transponder keys? Gotta go to dealer? Can I take ecu or they need truck?

I had to take my whole car in when my girlfriend lost the key with the chip in it. Im not positive but I didnt think the car would even start without the proper chip/car combination?

Wow, talk about an ingenious way to milk some cash off the customer, make a proprietary key you can only get from the dealership, then tout it as an anti-theft device.

So you bought it without driving it first? I think if you bought it from a dealer they are obligated to provide that. If you bought it with full disclosure, then shame on you if it wasn't a smoking deal. If you bought it without full disclosure, then at least you should have driven it first, heard it run ... something. If it did run & now it doesn't, go back to the seller. You got shafted ... or something.

x2 on this. I had no idea they put chips in jeep keys. Mine doesnt have on, so thats news to me. But as stated it wouldnt start if it were the chip. It sounds like there is another problem though such as your iac, or tps. They usually go hand and hand. Hopefully its something simple.

I will give a little more info here. I bought the truck for 1100.00. 4 door sport all power everything works. My friend is president of a credit union. Man who owned the jeep got sick and had to give it up. He was told to leave key in truck but didn't. Locksmith made chip key but could not get one code in line up. It does start!!! After letting it idle several times to get oil to rockers I started and reveved engine over 5000. I can start and get it to move with tranny till it dies. Dealer deal 45.00 key 75.00 program fee truck must be taken to dealer. You need to get two keys because locksmiths won't make keys unless you have two ( let someone borrow your jeep they can't make key ). So if you have 2001 and up make a third key. I thank yall for responce. What about cheap 2" lift it needs shocks so might as well. Also I like those roof racks. This is my 2nd Cherokee and 6th jeep. I love 4.0 engines which are modified 258 sixes I think. Good trucks, glad to join your forum. Thanks

Sounds like your key (I bet its's grey in colour) That would explain why it would start then stop. It should start, run for 2 seconds then stop.
The stealership is your option to get a key programmed, get 2 keys then you can program a third youself (its in the owners manual)
You may find a mobile guy to come to your house to do it also, but may be hard to get ahold of because they do stealerships and 12 volt shops (remote starters)
