Default Cherokee XJ Tire size question...

What is the largest size tire I can put on my 1995 Jeep Cherokee?

I bought a winter beater about 3 weeks ago. It is a 1995 jeep Cherokee XJ and it has 4x4. The tires that are on it are 215/75/15, When I type in my vehicle on say, tire rack.com it states an option of a 225/75/15. I read my driver door and it states just 215/75/15, no option for the next size up. I have read on Cherokee forms where people used 235/75/15's with no issue. I took it to a tire shop and the guy said I would not be able to fit 225's on it. What gives? Was there different suspension packages on these Cherokee's? It has a 4.0L Engine with 4x4, everything else is stock with 15" steelies.... Can someone shed some light on this issue for me? I shouldn't have to get a lift kit so I can go 1 size up on tires should I? The tire guy thought the jeep was a 2WD Jeep when I pulled in, he stated that is was a bit lower than a standard 4x4 Cherokee? I never heard of that...

no cherokee are all the same hieght 225s were stock options. and yes people run 235s as well. Some even run 30s with no lift but 235 would be in the safe zone.

You should have no problem fitting 225's.
My Jeep (sport) came from the factory with 225x75x15 on it.
I put 235's on it, no problem.

So it wouldn't say on the door 225 as an option unless it was ordered that way from the factory? Is there really a big difference between the 215/225 anyway? The 215 is like 25.00 total cheaper but not to many aggressive tires are made in that size..I was looking at a set of uni- from walmart at 90 each or tirerack some Geolandar H/T-S for 100.00, or Winterforce UV for 65.00 each..

maybe your springs have some major sag... but other than that, 225s will fit nicely, 235s will fit well, and 30s will fit (barely)

I just bought 4 new Difinity Dakota A/T tires from Pep Boys and absolutely love them! I have an '01 XJ Limited 4.0 and I got them to squeeze on 245/16s!! They fit by less than 1/4 inch (front fenders) but up and down plenty of room and no rub.

The best part is that Difinity's are made by Cooper Tires and Peop Boys does Buy 3, Get 4th FREE!

Yes they make them in practically every size imaginable and always seem to have them in stock - I highly recommend! They look just like the BFG A/T tires and they perform well ...and my handling improved.

I'll try to post pics asap
