Cherokee stock coils
Hello everyone, I actually just needed to know the stock coil spring length. The ones on mine are original with the vehicle and with over 400k miles on the engine and body it would be unwise to try to lift it.

When you say that it would be unwise to lift it, what does that mean? Are you implying that there's a lot of rust and the frame/body is not structurally strong enough to support the vehicle weight?

Ive replaced the entire rear suspension, leaf springs and the shocks. It is from Indiana so it does have some rust but I have been trying to keep it as good as I can without replacing the whole frame. The only reason I asked is it sits pretty high up in the back now and there really doesn't say what the stock coils are. Usually they are lifted.

Wouldn't happen to know the measurement in the rear from the center of the axle to the bottom of the flare(17" is stock)? Or from the top of the axle housing to the "frame"(6" is stock)?

So you mean unwise "to add a suspension lift", not unwise to "put it on a lift in an auto shop"?
Ok, I just had a bad experience with my TJ and frame rot and "not being able to put it on a lift"... You were bringing back some bad memories! LOL!
In that case I'd second what EZEARL said and recommend that you consider the whole front end for what might need to be done.
I'm sorry, I've never been accused of being the smartest guy in the room, so bear with me -- Is your concern that you want to make sure putting new coil springs on the front will "complement" the new leaf springs (or in other words, "bring into basically equal ride height front and back")? If that's the case I would say that if you used OEM replacement leaf springs (in other words, did NOT use "lift"'ed leafs) then you just need to get the OEM replacement front coils and you'll have a "factory original" ride height.

I just measured the rear, it is 17" and 6" respectively, but to be expected with the new leaf in there. I took some pictures so you guys have a better understanding what I am dealing with.

And actually let me rephrase my statement. I do want to level it out but when I go look up like "coil spring for 2001 jeep cherokee" it will come up with like 5 different heights and I wanted to know before I bought one.

Your rear measurements are at factory specs. The front measurements should be 17 1/2" or 6 1/2". All those are the measurements for Cherokee XJ's w/o the Up Country package which adds 1" to the measurements. All XJ coil springs are interchangeable. According to Rock Auto the Moog CC780 is the oem replacement for the std duty suspension on a '96 XJ. It should put you at the front oem measurements. Even though it's not listed for 97-01 XJ's they'll fit. We've been through this here before. Let's see if anyone else replies though.

I agree with EZEARL.
You could download a mopar parts catalog for your year and using the VIN number you should be able to determine the exact part number - then you can cross reference it to Moog or another manufacturer.
A VIN decoding website can tell you what packages your Jeep does or does not have.
