I have a 2001 Cherokee 6 cyl Sport with an inoperative speedometer and
I have not been able to find a complete wiring diagram for the speedometer circuit.
I have a diagram of the speed sensor circuit that shows the wiring from the sensor
to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) that appears to be correct, but nothing
from the ECU to the Instrument Cluster.
If someone out there has had any experience with the speedometer that
maybe could shed some light on this one, I can E-Mail a rather detailed
description of what I have done so far and a copy of the partial electrical
schematic that I have - but briefly, I have eliminated - by a test at a
speedometer shop, the speed sensor and by substitution, the instrument
cluster as an issue by substitution of a known good cluster (we have
three other 2001 Cherokees) so I am likely looking for a wiring fault.
Anyone know where an (accurate) wiring diagram can be found?
I have some reasons to suspect a wiring issue as someone has apparently
been fooling around in the main harness under the dash and along the
firewall in the engine compartment, and further I found physical interference
between the drivers side hood hinge and the harness on the firewall just
below it, and in fact did find one chafed but intact wire here and one
that was chafed and actually broken that I repaired. I was so excited
thinking that I had found the problem. Short lived though:
It didn't
I bought this Jeep a month ago to fix up for a grandson to use when he starts
school soon and the speedometer worked when I bought this Jeep
None of the hundreds of schematics out there on the internet are complete
and/or correct for a 2001 Cherokee, the local library has almost that many also,
but none showing the wiring from the ECU to the cluster, and none of the local
Jeep dealers want anything to do with it - at any cost.......
Any Electronic speedometer experts out there?

The wiring for the speedo is the wires from the ECU to the dash cluster. There is a chip in it that communicates with the ECU that determines speedo cluster function. Really, the most common problem with the speedo not working is the VSS on the transfer case. They are a magnetic switch and can and will quit over time
