Check for clogged radiator. Fush cooling system or just run without a hood. J/K keep the hood some people put vents in their hood I chose to raise the hood it helped out alot. Renix xj's are a pain with the heat. also you can upgrade the cooling system from a 94.
by hot i mean damn near in red, if not in red. hwy temp is about 210, when i stop and no air moving it runs up to about 230 or more, ive seen 250 a couple times. this is with my electric running nonstop too.

Start small... Flush the system and before you fill it back remove the
T-Stat and test it in hot water. If the T-Stat does not open then replace and refill.

i think you said you had a 89 so im pretty shur that your gonna have a closed coolant system ( correct me if im wrong someone) in this case you cant flush your system with out gettin a new radiator(recomended). but if you have a opened system, its easier to pull the lower hose off the radiator than gettin to the drain plug.

rewire your fan to a switch and run it continually helped me, you might also have a air pocket if you have the old coolant bottle set up. fixed that and mine ran cooler too!
