Cherokee on lpg/propane
Does anyone know what would cause my '95 cherokee 4.0l ltd. - converted to propane (lpg here in the UK) - to cut out at junctions? It was fine on both petrol and lpg until I let the lpg tank run dry (accidentally!), then it started giving trouble after my first fill. Still no problems starting & running on petrol and there's no backfiring, either. Any advice?

As I said in the introduction thread I don't know about LPG but it sounds as if you might have introduced some moisture into the system. Whoever you are buying the LPG from may be the best place to evacuate the system and then install a dryer to further filter moisture from the system. It(moisture) may be in the regulator for the LPG.

Much like gas tanks, propane(lpg) tanks will get crud and corrosion in them.. When you don't run it dry the crud stays in the bottom of the tank pretty much undisturbed. But when you run it dry and refilled it the crud picks up and will get carried into the lines. There should be a filter somewhere before the regulator. Take a look there to see if it is clogged.

Thanks for the info - it looks like there may be a whole new dimension to this. A mechanic just took a look while I was running it up on propane and reckons there's a pinhole sized escape of gas, right dead centre in the vapouriser. Assuming this is a bad sign, I'm now looking for a new unit, which I'm hoping should cure the problem anyway.

Can the pinhole be welded or braised closed? That may save you some bucks. Let us know how you end up fixing it!

What kind of vaporizer does it use?? The kind I'm most familiar with are used on Farm Equipment and fork-lifts here in the US. They would be VERY hard to weld or braze sucessfully. They are made from aluminum alloys and Bronze castings. Think of how a TBI injector works, they are the same principle but on a much more compact scale.

Only one I ever saw was bronze or brass and I thought that brazing would work it was the size of a soup can.

Well, the man at the garage reckons it's a case of rebuilding the vapouriser, so that's what we're trying next. We can but see..
