Default Cherokee first time owner!

Hello all,

I just picked up a 1995 jeep cherokee sport 4.0l automatic with 122k miles. The body is in ok shape. It does have a few small dings here and there and the hood is peeling pretty bad from the sun. I am also missing my right rear wheel fender(anyone know where I can get one). I paid almost nothing for the jeep and it drives pretty well. Its really only going to be used in the winter and when stuff wont fit in my car.

Only issue I have noticed is that when I first step on the gas I feel something strange under the car. And every once in a while I feel the same thing when I hit a bump. Other than that the jeep feels pretty solid. ANy ideas what that might be? I know I am being a little vague but I am learning about cars as I go. Also, I am missing a piece of the hose that connects the gaskets to the air flow box anyone know where I can purchase that piece?

for the bump check all of your rubber mounts could be motor mount and tyranny mount as for the hose dealer or junk yard

The strange noise occurs mostly(when I start the car) I am guessing its the starter or the flywheel. It is an automatic. Any idea on how much it will cost to replace the starter or the flywheel? I know the labor is intensive for flywheels but ballpark figures would help! Thanks in advance.

I also just realized i posted this in the wrong section as my jeep is a 1995. If the mods could move it that would be greatly appreciated.

I really do enjoy it so far and my other car is a highly modified 2006 mustang gt vert. The jeep does 65 mph at around 2,000 rpms and its really smooth. My only concern is this flywheel and/or starter issue. Should I just drive it till it goes and then fix it or should I take care of it now? ALso, which one do you think it is?

Welcome to the forum!! and automatic transmissions don't have flywheels, they have torque converters so you can cross that out bro. You can also change the starter yourself with basic tools.

Default Actually...

Automatics still have a flywheel the starter uses the flywheel to turn the engine over. Without a fly wheel the starter would have to turn the torque converter and I have never seen a torque converter with teeth for the starter to spin it.

I can't even find flywheels for an automatic. I was beginning to believe they were just for the manual. Where would I go about purchasing a flywheel for an automatic. Also, The issue(the grind) occurs sometimes when I start the car and sometimes when I accelerate. DOes that sound more like the starter or the flywheel? Thanks again for all your help guys!

flywheel is what the torque converter bolts to. mounts right on the back of the crankshaft and has teeth all the way around it. climb under yours and pull that dust cover off, you'll see it. you can get a prybar and rotate the engine by the teeth on the flywheel, or have someone else rotate it with a wrench on the other end of the crank while you're down there looking, see if there's any broken teeth or if maybe it's warped.

Old Mopar torque converters used to have a toothed ring on them that was heat-shrink fit IIRC. I have also seen flex plates with teeth on them.

was just googling it, learn something new every day. I always thought they were 2 different names for the same thing, lol. Same function though except one is for a torque converter to bolt to, the other is for a clutch to bolt to (and a little thicker/heaver I guess).

Still, turn it and check for broken teath or warpage.
