Default Cherokee engine stumble

Am a new member, just bought a 98 Cherokee Ltd with 127K. Great vehicle except for one thing, when you start it from cold, engine fires right up, but then when you start to drive, it stumbles, acts like it wants to stall, then surges and bucks. After a few minutes, it smooths out and runs fine. Took to mechanic, who installed new fuel pump and did fuel system flush. Runs a little better, but is still stumbling until warmed up.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

doesn't really sound like a CPS, usually when that goes the engine actually shuts off

Yes and no, when its on its way out it will cause improper fuel/air and spark issues. When the CPS is completely shot the vehicle will not run.
