Cherokee dash and stereo are turning off and on.. WHY??!!

Cherokee dash and stereo are turning off and on.. WHY??!!
I have a 2001 Cherokee XJ and I went to start it up and all of my gauges and stereo werent working at all. The jeep was running fine but none of the gauges were working, not even the dash lights or the RPM pin none of it. I started driving and when i would hit the gas they came on for a little bit but it wasnt steady. they were flickering on and off and now the check engine light is the only thing that will stay on. This is effecting the stereo also, whenever the dash goes on and off so does the stereo. Does anyone out there know what the heck is wrong with my jeep!!??
