Cherokee Check Pin "hinge"
Bought vehcicle used (2000 VERY clean 4WD XJ) last week end.
I am finding a few little things to fix, but no big deal yet.
The drivers side door jam has a bracket in the middle of the door that usually has a PIN inserted through both holes. It is NOT the real door hinges, so what the H_____ is it ??? Maybe the guy that owned the vehicle was very big and needed more door opening ???? Without the pin, it allows the door to open more. What is that thing ??? Dealer wanted to rip me off , when all it might take is a simple $5.00 pin replacement ??
thanks, Randy

It's your door check. It holds the door open so it doesn't swing back and bang your knees. If the pin is out I would predict the door check is broken also. You can pick one up from the junk yard for about five bucks.

no, if all of the parts are there then all you have to do is grab a pair of pliers and pull the arm of the door check that has retracted into the door out. while youre holding it with the pliers, line up the hole it has with the hole of the bracket attached to the door frame and slip your bolt/pin/nail in.
when i bought my xj this was undone, but i realized the previous owner undid it because it would have been making a lot of noise as the door had started to come off of its welds and was not sitting quite level.
I reattached the check arm after rewelding the hinges and it works perfectly fine

If you get the assembly from the junk yard then get one for the front and one for the rear. Almost certainly the spring part for the front door will be worn out and useless. The front arm/lever is longer but the spring is the same for the front and rear. Combine to make a good unit.

My driver side door doesn't stay open on its own. And I found one of those Pin check things that CF1K1 posted a link to thats been sitting in my center console. I had no idea what it was for. Looks like the PO was into half-assing all his work.
Thanks guys -- To just put the pin in (no panel pulling); but if I have to install the new "arm", then the panel probably has to come off ?????
Thanks for the suggestions on getting TWO parts ....
A lot of our friendly neighborhood "JUNK YARDS" have gone away and have become recycling super businesses !!! The closest one to me now
is almost in MEXICO (Otay Mesa).
There was a time in California where you could purchase some good used parts for a few dollars, now they seem to be in the middle of reasonable and retail !!!!
Thanks, Randy from Oceanside, CA
