i have a 91 jeep cherokee 4.0 4x4
if i sorta step on it from a dead stop, its like the transfer case goes clunk clunk. its not much of a noise, but you can feel it.
does any one know what that could be?

Hi and welcome to CF from Tj... It sounds like the TC chain is bad (common problem with high mileage XJ's) Here is a link on changing it...Tj

First do you have a 231 Transfer case, if so why is it in 4wd when on pavement. If you are getting the clunk when in 2wd, look at motor and tranny mounts and U-Joints in the rear drive shaft. TC Chain could be an issue IF you are in 4wd when the clunk happens. Could also be the bushings in your rear springs or shackles. Could be excessive lash in the ring and pinion, does it whine?

had the same problem and it was the t-case mount and the t-case would move a good 3" from side to side, get under it and just push up and over either way and you will be able to tell!
