Default Check engine light/turn signal problem

First let me say, I don't have a code reader. I still have a rotary phone in my hallway and some carbon paper and a manual typewriter for backup. The scenario is as follows:

I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee. I noticed the left side turn signals were blinking fast this morning but the bulbs were still working. I looked high and low for the flasher with no luck. On the passenger side under the hood I pulled the first relay close to the firewall in the fuse box marked test relay,( hell it looked like a flasher to me.) Now I have a check engine light. Can anybody tell me first, where the turn signal flasher is on a 1996 Sport and is there away to reset the check engine light without a special tool. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cool

I have a 98, so things might be a lil different, but to restart/reset the light, you can unplug the battery (completely) for about 10 minutes.

As far as the codes for the lights...
any Autozone or ORileys, Murrays or Action Auto will usually read the code for free. They'll come out to the Jeep, plug her up to their portable, and tell you what the issue is. Then they'll reset it if you want.

Might not be a bad idea to find out what the code is.
You might have a ground issue.

Good luck-
Billy

Billy,

Thanks for the info. I disconnected the battery and light reset. I am sure I trigged it when I pulled the relay out of the fuse box. I am going to check the turn signal lights in the am, but I still can't locate the flasher. I even checked my manual, and no luck.
