Default Check engine light from none working speedo

So I bought this 98 jeep a month ago knowing I was going to have to do a few things to it one of them being to fix the speedo so that it would get rid of the check engine light. So I have adjusted and move the speedo housing to all 3 different positions and none work. So yesterday I pulled apart the dash and cleaned the connections to the cluster and then cleaned up a few grounds in the engine bay. Turned the jeep on and the light was gone so I drove it around awhile to see if it would come back on and it did not. Well today I turned it on to go get it inspected and the light was back again. Should I go ahead and replace the entire VSS on the transfer case or try something else? The jeep does have a SYE if that could cause this problem also?

Find out what the actual code is and start from there.

Yup, post actual code and we can go from there. Don't want to chase your tail on this one.

With OBD, the devil is in the details.

Could be a different code, you have to check every time the CEL comes on. There are hundreds of codes for an OBDII vehicle, you can never assume it's the same code when the light is on.

Best bet is to google search P0500 + Jeep Cherokee.
