Common on '97+ Cherokees and indicates a bad connection between the wiring harness and the cluster. Lots of threads on how to clean the connection and put it back together properly. Try a "no bus" search or something similar.

under the left side of the dash behind the hood release is 2 plugs with bolts running through them. make sure those bolts are tightened. that's what mine was. the dealership charges like 400 dollars to fix it which is stupid

Cool

As a chrysler, jeep tech i see a lot of these, not too often on the xj's (thank god) this can be caused by poor connections as the earlier posts have suggested, however sometime it can also be caused by a bad module ie.abs, airbag etc, or any sensor that shorts out the 5v reference voltage from the pcm.

I dont know if this helps but i had the same problem on my 2000 dodge durango a few years back and it turned out to be a bad OBDII ECM (computer) mounted on the passenger side under the hood on the fender. it cost me $400 for a new ECM. and when i installed it i had to borrow my friends Snap-on MT2500 scan tool when i installed it and i had to punch in the vin number to the new computer.

Chrysler has a Technical Service Bulletin on this (TSB 08-15-99). The Right connector gets corroded over the years and begins to work intermitently or not at all (as in my case). Its an $11 part thru Chrysler, and should fix your problem. It has to be soldered in place, but its a pretty easy job.

Hey Everyone!
My 2001 cherokee has the same problem with the engine light and the gauges going dead, but there is a really weird twist in my case. If i push the headlight, blinker, brake pedal, or window switch the radio and cd changer (which sits in the trunk and is hooked in parallel with the radio) restart and if the gauges are dead they will come back to life too.

I have taken the instrument cluster out and the contacts looked clean, but i went ahead and cleaned them anyway. This didnt help.

I should also mention that the switch on the drivers door for the front pas window doesnt work, and the window switch on the front passenger door only works in the up direction. Also the radio wont work if i turn the key to on but dont start the engine. The jeep also has an after market remote starter installed.

I went to the dealer to order the new window switch and told the guys there about my problem. He had never heard anything like this. Has anyone on this forum heard anything like this???? i'm stumped too. Please help me!!!!! haha

I noticed my ABS light about a month ago, and that is around the time the no bus light started as well. Do you think by unplugging the ABS is might fix the issue? I really don't care for ABS anyways.
