I drove to the store idled in the parking lot for 5 minutes, then turned it off for a few minutes then when I started my jeep the jeep started shaking like the engine was working super hard and the temp was hotter than usual and then the check engine light was on. I drove it home no problem, any ideas?

Strategy is always the same when the check engine light is on. Pull the codes. Anything less is guesswork.
For a 2000, you'll need either a code reader or a scan tool. Or take it to a parts store like Autozone who will read your codes for free.
