Cheapest is not necessarily better unless it's cheapest for a name brand with which you are familiar. You could probably get re-built parts. They are less expensive, but some re-builders do a better job than others.

I just buy parts at Napa. They aren't the cheapest, but they are more affordable than the dealer, for sure.

While I agree that brakes are not something to skimp on you can get some decent deals on OEM type brakes at your local parts houses. Are they going to be whisper quiet? Probably not, but they will stop you and that's the bottom line when it comes to brakes.

Call around to autozone, advance auto, oreilly, napa, carquest, and price things out. You can probably come out for under $250 at any of the big chains.

junkyard for the rotors and drums, new for the pads. all these parts are REALLY cheap already just buy new so you dont have one come apart when your trying to stop for that little kid that ran out in front of you...

A good warranty will not help him stop shorter when he cheaps out on parts.

What he really needs is a good pre-paid burial plan.

Brake pads and parts have to meet certain standards in the US. When it comes to the parts, its not their function and reliability that is questioned but more the longevity. Pretty sure if the brakes are non functional or are THAT MUCH worse than their more expensive counterparts then they wouldnt be on shelves. I used to buy the cheapest pads before i got black wheels (and got tired of brake dust) and they only issue they gave was their short lifespan. Otherwise, they worked great. And because they had a 2 year warranty, I just had to bring my old brakes in to the store when they wore out after 6 months of use. And i just continued the cycle. Just my 2 cents tho

Had to change them a lot of times, though.

I still believe that a good to premium semi-metallic pad would stop shorter than a soft, organic, barely-meet-the-minimum pad.

Might help you avoid an accident.

Rockauto.com is excellent, they've kept my last four vehicles on the road! I've always gotten great prices and quick shipping from them. Never had any problems with the parts I've ordered from them.

x2 (x3?) That's pretty much exactly what I do, too. RockAuto for planned repairs/maintenance, and Napa for need-it-now fixes.
