Default Changing ring and pinion

I plan to put 4.10's in my Dana 30 & 44. I know I need new carriers for both when going with numerically higher gears. What I don't know is will any #3 Dana 44 carrier work or does it have to be a specific one for a XJ? And will any Dana 44 ring and pinion work or does that also have to be specific to a XJ? From what I have read the ring and pinion for the Dana 30 have to be reverse cut, correct?

And not to supersede the other questions, but will this work too?

The Dana is standard rotation.

you don't need a new carrier in the 44. you can run thick cut gears.
dana 44 pinions changed throughout the years so you need to get a gear set for whatever your axle is from.

as for the 30. what year is your xj?

HP or LP 30 or 44 run the same offset on the carriers for the same gear ranges. 3.92 and numericly higher for the 44, 3.73 and numericly for the 30. As long as its for a 3.92 up in a 44, it'll work with 4.10's in 44. As long as its for 3.73 or up dana 30, it'll work with a 4.10s in a 30.

That will not work due to the TJ dana 30 being low pinion and XJ's using a high pinion 30.

Ok so what I got is a 1988 Dana 44 from a XJ. The front is a HP30 that came stock in my 91 XJ. So I don't have to get the large carrier for 4.10 since Im now running 3.55?

for the front yes, you will need a 3.73:1 and up carrier and reverse cut gears. but the back you can still just run thick cut gears.

In my opinion you are better off going with a new rear carrier and "regular" cut gears. There are not many companies that offer the "thick" Dana 44 gears right now. Carriers, even new are relatively cheap.
