Changed Steering gear, now pump squeels
I need some help. I had to change the steering gear and that went fine. I had the front end up on a jack and I bleed the new gear by turning stop to stop with the motor off. It seem to bleed fine, taking fluid a couple of times. Now when I start it, the belt slip like mad, squeals like a stuck pig. Is it a bad pump that showed up with a new gear?
Thanks,

It's probably belt tension if you removed the belt - even if there was air in the system I don't think it would cause the PS pump to "bind" and cause the belt to squeal.
Does it squeal louder when you try to turn the wheels? You could try spraying some water on the pulleys to find where the belt is squealing the loudest

It doesn't make any difference if I'm turning or not. It feels like the pump is frozen. There is definitely burning belt smell and when I open the pump reservoir after running a minute, it releases some pressure. The is no bubbling or foam in the oil reservoir either. Could it just be a bad gear box? when it's running there is no power assist to the steering.
