Default Central lock not working

I just bought a second hand Cherokee with some minor issues that I am trying to fix this week.

One of them is the central locking system. If I press the button inside on the drivers door everything locks. But if I use the key on the outside, then only that door locks instead of not all four. How can I fix this?

Are you sure it has that function from the factory? On older domestic vehicles, the door locks are usually mechanical lock/unlock only using a key and you either have to use a remote fob to activate the power locks or use the switch inside. Do you have an owner's manual or know some one else to ask to confirm.

XJs were not equipped with this option. Remote Keyless Entry does this job.

Ha, that makes sense! But since I don't have the remote it is pretty annoying to close all doors by waiting for everyone to get out, use the switch in the driver door and then get out myself, and finally lock the driver door.

Is there a better solution?

All cars used to be that way.

Aftermarket RKE is an option.

Does your lock button not work with the divers door open?

If you have an infra-red reveiver in the overhead console or at rear-view mirror, than you can get a key FOB for remote entry/lock.
1996 and earlier use the infra-red system and can be self programmed in two minutes.

Okay good to know. For the moment I will stick with
1. getting out of the car
2. wait for everyone closing the door
3. use the button on the driver side
4. close the driver door
5. lock it

If I may revise.
Passenger doors can be locked with them still open.
Hit the lock button on driver or passenger door. close doors, done.

Yep... most you have to do is wait for everyone to open their doors.
