Here lately the jeep has started acting up when first taking off. Mainly when the engine was cold it would start cutting out whenever taking off. After doing it once it does not do it again. It almost acts like it is not getting enough fuel.
Took it to Autozone and they ran the code. Said it was something with the computer, possibly a short somewhere but it was showing failed park/neutral swith or open or shorted circuit condition.

I have only owned this jeep for about a month and have replaced a lot of stuff. After buying it i looked at it a little better and the wiring is pretty messy looking. PLease help!

Sorry I guess I should have put that. It's a 97 Cherokee with 4.0. I believe the engine is out of a 96 though

So someone said it could be that the nss switch was bypassed. I had noticed the reverse lights didn't work before and went and tried starting it in gear and it worked. Would that be what is causing the issue? Is this something that should be fixed?

The bypassed NSS would cause the code you are seeing but I don't see how a bypassed NSS would affect anything else. All it is doing is completing the ground for the starter motor briefly and the electrical circuit for the backup lamps. Mines been bypassed for 6 years

That wouldn't cause the stalling issue? Could that be the cause of the code that is saying there is a short? Does yours like that make the cruise not work because mine doesn't either.

I helped a guy here in the past few days who couldn't get his engine to start w/o the auto trans in the vehicle. Told him to bypass the NSS and it started. I can see you having engine running problems if the NSS bypass on yours isn't a good connection. First thing I'd do is find the end of the NSS connector that is jumped and remove the jumper IF that's how it was done. Next I'd pull, clean, and regrease the NSS. It's an easy job. Once you get the NSS working the way it should see how she runs.

Your cruise problem could be no vacuum. There should be a vacuum resevoir behind the front bumper on the passenger side. Check to see if it's hooked up. Actually what you need is a vacuum line schmatic for your XJ so you can check and if needed repair the system. I've seen one posted here. If I can find it I'll post it. If not maybe someone will.
