Default Catalytic Converter Recall

I understand why the cat removal post was locked...but here's some info to REPLACE a bad one.

August 2006 Dealer Service Instructions for:
Emissions Recall E22 Reprogram PCM and Inspect Catalytic Converter

1996 (XJ) Jeep® Cherokee
1996 (ZJ) Jeep® Grand Cherokee
NOTE: This recall applies only to the above vehicles equipped with a 4.0L (ERH) engine.

1997 - 1998 (AN) Dodge Dakota
1997 - 1998 (XJ) Jeep® Cherokee
1997 – 1998 (TJ) Jeep® Wrangler (built after June 30, 1996)
NOTE: This recall applies only to the above vehicles equipped with a 2.5L (EPE) engine.

IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer used vehicle inventory. Dealers should complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also perform this recall on vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process.

Subject
The Powertain Control Module (PCM) on about 467,400 of the above vehicles may not be capable of detecting a deteriorating catalytic converter. Also, under certain conditions, some catalytic converters may be subject to mechanical degradation that causes a rattle.

Good info, thanks!

I knew "they" were going to close that thread, lol.

It kinda sucks, my cat. rattles bad on my 98 4.0, looks like I can't get myself a free one, bummer.

Maybe I'll just hollow out my cat and call it good...

yeah, i'm about to take mine in for this to be done.

in about an hour!

the cat rattles a lot because of something loose inside, its super annoying. hopefully they'll just replace it with a new one.

I believe some 98-99 models where effected as well, worth a check with your local dealer....if not, I'd recommend a Magnaflow direct fit cat.

Go here: http://www.jeep.com/en/owners/ and enter your vin in the lower left corner to see if you have a recall open.

Default 98 Cherokee Cat

Hello,

I see a few things around the internet that the cats on this Jeep rust through and need replacing. I got a Jeep with this exact problem, the O˛ sensor has rusted around the connection and is no longer part of the cat.

However, I put the Jeep's VIN in and nothing comes up for a cat recall.

Is this something I can take to a shop and have them replace it under a recall?
