Cat question
Im trying fix my buddies jeep on the cheap. It's a 95 or 96 Cherokee auto 4.0. His cat converter is rattling pretty bad. Can you get those used? Can I just pull the guts out of it, or could I just drive a big screw through it to stop the rattling. It does have an o2 sensor in it. What direction should I head with this thing? I am assuming new ones are too expensive.

it's illegal to remove a cat. if it has an O2 sensor after the cat it's a 96 which is OBDII the downstream o2 sensor monitors the cats efficiency. most auto part stores sell universal cats fairly cheap, just be sure and get the correct cat. unless you have access to a welder, if it is a 96, get a cat that has a bung for an o2 sensor, otherwise you'll have to install one for the downstream o2 sensor. also the cat needs to be in the same location as it was originally installed or it will cause a check engine light.

It depends on what state you live in on the price of a cat. Here in cali the ream you a new one because of our stinky emmission laws and newer regulations on them. In Ca there are now special numbers on the cats befor any shop will install them or any out of state will ship them to us. Which most wont.

True, I just assume most people posting are not in CA. CA converters are in the $150+ range.

Tiss tiss, shouldn't assume lol... I had got a couple cats from a great website paid $100 for the two of them, just before the new law went into action here and had them installed. Next time jeeps had to be smogged BAM FAILED! Because the new law went in place and smog tech saw they were new and had no CA ID on them. Most places dont check the cats, but there is always that one that will.

93 - 95 Exhaust Look Up
96 - 00 Exhaust Look Up
Those are for the Direct Fit Converters, the universals are half that price.
