Default cat converter

I know about the sticky reference to cat converters. But I obtained my 97 Sport without one. The previous owner removed the cat after it went south and replaced it with a glass pack. The o2 sensor was installed in the pipe in front of the glass pack. (BTW the sound is awful.) The check engine light is on due to this set up. My question is, is this set up bad for the motor? Seems to be running fine. Can I install a generic cat instead of the OEM. (Trying to stay cheap) Will replacing the cat make the check engine light go off or will it have to be reset? And last question, what is a good recommended exhaust system? I like a deep throaty V8 sound but I dont think one can get that with the inline 6. So I guess I'll go quiet.

I'm new to the forum and love it! Lots of info here.

Yes you can replace the cat with a generic and have a shop weld it on. I would think once you have the O2 in the right place and a cat installed ie the correct amount of back pressure and then have the CEL reset your light should stay off.

For exahust mangaflow for cat and dynomax for cat back. Can get cat back for around $50 with rebate, cat for around $90. Then just have it installed.

I put a magnaflow high flow and super 40 flowmaster and custom made a tail pipe. 2.5 inch from header back. Sounds good and better power and mpg. If your looking for a upgrade it's an idea

Default 97? Get a stock cat.

Im jealous of my neighbor, he has a 95. He has no O2 sensor on the Cat. Mine is a 96 it does. My light was on too. I replaced the sensor and it fixed it. I later gat a stock Cat. Fixed. You are going to need both too. I clamped it all, no probs. Because of your computer you cant do too much without having the comp reset. Expensive! Hi flo muffler and MSD Box is about all you can do without recalibrating that darn Gen II comp.
