Default Cat back O2 sensor

So the wire harness fell into the driveshaft for the rear O2 sensor. I'm gonna have to splice it together. Do you think it's worth it to replace the sensor and splice the new one rather than wait till the current one fails. Its a 98 with 204000 miles on it.

Did it break before or after connector? When mine did that it was after the connector and I just swapped the sensor.

It broke before the connector. The wires were actually pulled out of one of the connectors on the vehicle side. The O2 sensor is undamaged.

That sucks. Sounds like a junkyard trip for that pigtail is in order then splice it in so you can replace the o2 sensor later if needed.

Would it hurt to wait to fix this.

It shouldn't. All that o2 sensor does is monitor cat efficiency.

Try to get one from a '98 thru '01. The wire colors are the same for these years (to avoid confusion).

'97 is about the same, except that the signal wire for the '97 is Tan/Black tracer, whereas the '98-01 it is Tan/White tracer.

EDIT: The '97 - '01 use the same NTK part number downstream O2S. The '96 is different so I didn't include it in the compatible connectors.

So I'm confused on how to wire it. There is 2 white wires a black and a grey on the oxygen sensor. There is a tan/white wire, a green wire a black/yellow wire and a black wire on the vehicle side. What color matches with what?

Ignore the wires going into the oxygen sensor. When you get the harness/connector from the junk yard, it should have the same colors as the harness on your truck. Splice tan/white to tan/white, green to green, black to black, etc. Then once the new connector is spliced in, plug the O2 sensor into it.

Also, once you replace that harness/connector, make sure you snap the connector into its little retainer up in the tunnel above the cat. There's a little metal bracket up there whose sole purpose is to keep your O2 harness away from the drive shaft. It has a hole in it to accept the plastic barbed fitting that keeps it up there. If that barb is gone, just zip tie it up there.

I called the junk yards around me. Either they don't have the connector or they don't want to chop a complete harness without me paying a ridiculous price.
