Default Carpet Compatibility

Hello. I have a 1996 XJ Country and I would like to replace the carpet because the previous owner spilled paint on it. I have found a newer XJ (i think a 2000?) at a junkyard that has near-perfect carpeting. Will this carpet fit in my 1996?

COMMENTS:
When I look for carpet replacement online, I see that there are kits for 1984-1996. I also know that the floor plan (having to do with the raised floor portion for the seats to attach to anyway) changed in the 1996.

Does anyone know what carpets will fit in what year XJs?

Also, if there is a difference when it comes to the front and back sections? For instance, will the back (cargo) carpet fit in all years while the front is different?

Thanks for you help.

This is a great question, and I'm in the same boat right now. The carpet Amazon lists for the '84 to '96 Cherokee looks like so:

The carpet they list for the '97 to 2001 XJ looks like this:

Notice it has the molds for the seat crossmember which my '96 has. I know '96 XJs shared some parts and configurations from the '97+ XJs, and I'm wondering if this is the case here too.

Does anyone know if the '97 XJ carpet will fit the '96?

I was under the impression that the seat mounting for 1996 changed to the later model setup as well... I even almost bought a set of super-clean seats from a 2000 this past weekend. I can't imagine the rest of the floor pan being drastically different.

How much is a carpet from the junkyard, anyway? My local yard says $25.00... That's good enough for me to go get it and see...

Good luck!

Just for future searchers of this thread, if you have a '96 XJ and want new carpet for it make sure and order the carpet for the '97+ XJs. It fit perfectly. My XJ is a late '95 (9/95) build date too, so I would imagine all '96s would need this carpeting.

Thank you, I will be ordering for a 96 in the spring. Have a 96 and it had the seat mount hump as well.

Take your time with the carpet, not as easy as it looks. Your molded carpet will not look that detailed either.

Nor will I order mass backing again.

Don't like the mass backing?

What exactly is it?

It's basically extra padding on the back of the fabric for sound deadening.

I have '00 carpet in my '89. It was given to me. I cut it up in 4 sections for easy removal if it gets muddy.
The differences are:
-the driver and passenger floor is different at the front of the seat mounts, there is sort of a built-in beam in the floor pan on the 96 (?) up XJ
-the rear passenger floor seems to be a inch or two larger in the 96 (?) up XJ

These differences are negligible as it doesn't really affect the ussfullness of the carpet. I think the rear is identical in size.

Can you link the amazon carpet? I searched around for it and couldn't find any 97-01 carpets on there.

Free shipping on Amazon. Make sure you compare, because Rockauto routinely rapes people in that regard.

Yeah, I made sure because they've gotten me a few times. Shipping was only 12$ or something.

No freaking joke... I had a cart with about $50.00 worth of tune-up and gasket stuff in it this afternoon and the shipping came out to another $52.00. What a joke, I'll go get it locally tomorrow.
