Hello I have a 95 cherokee 4.0 HO that over heats at high way speed driving on minor grades but stays cool when I am crawling. I recently upgraded to a 3 row aluminum radiator, high flow water pump, and 3 electric fans. By now I would think my jeep cooling system is solid. Can anybody chime in of what is going on. I also did a compression check so no blown head. Thank you

 

How's the thermostat looking?

 

Fine also replaced it with a 180

 

Like Xjwonders said How's the t-stat? I would try to find an OEM one and give that a try. After market ones are a bit iffy when it comes to our XJ's

 

Before I installed it I tested it so I know it's good. My hoses are all good also they all have spring. I'm wondering if my jeep is just over heating from carrying to much weight up grades?

 

4.0 engines are designed to work best with 195 thermostats.

 

Not an expert here but just a thought. If bottom radiator hose doesnt have a wire spring in it could it be collapsing at higher rpms causing lower flow? Just a thought.

 

Yes they can collapse at high rpm. Thought thAt was my problem but it checks out. Has anybody ran silicon hoses?

 

What temps do you see @ the thermostat housing with an IR thermometer?

 

Well I'm running a aftermarket temp gauge and put the sensor at the thermostat housing it climbs to 240 +

 

Just a thought... Too many fans blocking airflow? Cowling leaking air and making the fans less efficient? Fans wired backwards and pushing instead of pulling?

A totally separate question... Sorry for the hijack... Did the 3-row radiator fit okay? I've got a leaky radiator and am considering an upgrade, if I don't have to make modifications to the other stuff. 1997 Cherokee, automatic, A/C, mechanical fan + 1 electric (stock setup).

How did you fit three, two sounds like you'd be blocking air flow, also are you sure you've got them installed correctly for pushing and pulling.
Also do you have them wiring correctly so they are not Spinning backwards?

 

So it's overheating according to your gauge, or is it actually blowing coolant out the expansion tank?

 

Need to explain further. Has something changed? Have u added a lot of weight? Anything blocking air flow? Huge tires? Did it overheat prior to the new rad? It's possible that an aftermarket rad, regardless of the number of rows, is not as efficient as the OE stock 1 row rad. What is the core thickness? If it's not thicker than OE stock, it's probably not as efficient. Shouldn't need any fans at hi-way speeds.

 

Fans are wired right because when I am crawling my jeep stays cool . Only when I am going highway speeds is when my temp starts to climb. But the only problem with the three row radiator is the mechanical fan being to close. And if one of your motor mounts is blown it is very possible it will eat your radiator up
