Can't shift gears
i have a 1998 cherokee with 4.0L 6cyl man 5 speed that will not shift into or out of gear while engine is running and clutch peddle is depressed. I have been able to get it to shift via power shifts but it is kind of hit or miss since i do not have a tach on the truck so i have been using the speedometer to do shift. problem is if i stop, the engine will cut out because i have to keep my foot on the brake or the truck will roll forward because the clutch does not disengage.
does anyone have any idea what i need to do to fix the problem?

Er...uh...
raise hood for light
ensure that any clutch fluid is at recommended capacity
lay on back under vehicle
have associate depress clutch pedal
observe clutch mechanism movement and/or lack thereof
report back

fluid is full, and i have taken off the slave and it seems to move when pedal is pushed in though that does not tell me the force generated by the push.

If the master and slave are working properly, holding pressure ect. Than it's a clutch problem, bad diaphragm, cracked pressure plate, broken and wedged torsion springs ect.
As said above,go under and have a assistant pump the clutch pedal to verify you have no hydraulic issues first.

um what is that?
So i started to bleed the system and i noticed some dirty looking fluid. My brain said dont put new fluid in with dirty fluid and try to bleed cause all that would do is contaminate the new. So i drained the system and found flaky stuff in the Clutch master cylinder. Take a look at picks, does that mean i have more of a problem then I thought?
