Your local auto part store will probably have a OBDII tool that will tell you exactly why your check engine light is on. Its usually free to use.

if you need a quick inspection reset your cpu, should last for 15 minuets or so till the thing relearns.

You can't cheat a obd inspection.
if you clear the code then it will just say OBD systems check incomplete and test will be aborted till it gets driven 60 to 80 miles and if the light pops back on after the checks are complete then it fails till the problem gets fixed.

Check all the rubber hoses going from the tank to the motor.
The 2000 xj's are known for evap hoses cracking.

JeepingDan beat me to it!

but....

^that wont work, since it will say the computer was disconnected and then that will cause it not to pass.

just get a code scanner and fix it right.

im not sure what year your jeep is, but you can flash codes on some models and figure out whats wrong. good luck!

I'll bet you a shiny new penny that its a bad gas cap causing the light.

With a 2000 Cherokee I think it'll dislpay the code on the digital odometer. Press&hold your odometer reset button with the key off, turn your ignition to "On" (not "Start) and release the button. Your cluster should go through a sequence and display any codes at the end.

Crawl underneath the gas tank and follow the lines up to the front and under the hood. Do a visual inspection for any kind of damage to the hoses.
