they are expensive, but i cut into the old one in my tj, and fixed it.

carefully cut it open near the top or bottom (dont cut the whole way through...slowly rotate it-there is a shaft in the middle to strengthen the canister IIRC)

dump all the old charcoal out of the the canister. replace the filter, go to wal mart, get filter charcoal for a fish filter in the fish section. change the charcoal, then take duraglass, bondo, or tiger hair, and put the canister back together, then seal it up with the duraglass or whatever. i did it to mine for 10-12 bucks, to buy the canister it was over 50 IIRC

Go to autozone buy a new cap and install it. make sure it is tight at least 3 clicks, have them erase the code with the OBDII scan tool, drive for 100 miles to be safe and then have it inspected ASAP before the light comes back on (if it does). the cap may have fixed the problem

My cap comes loose from time to time on my 2000. I just retighten it and disconnect the ground on the battery for a few minutes and its good as new.

yeah in the part of PA that im in they go right into the computer, so removing the bulb from the light wont do anything anyway, since its stored in the computer

Orrrrrrrrrrr....just pull your dash apart..takes 15 mins...wrap black electric tape around the bulb......put it all backtogether...get the inspection....then address the issue..with your bright new shiny inspection sticker, with a 2011 on it.
Just my 2 cents

yea, the smog guys know all those "hide-the-light" tricks. In California, they are so stricked about that stuff. I'm so glad I have a Renix XJ, pre-OBD.

You guys are all Nominated! You CANNOT reset the computor right before inspection because the system checks are incomplete and the test will abort. Maybe if you read my first post you and do a search on how obd II emissions are done you will understand WHY it's not as simple as pulling a bulb.

IDK how many states use the more extensive OBD testing. You and I both being from CT know they use it here. Used to be they just shoved a thing up the tailpipe (ow), but not so now.

I bought my Jeep used from VT and even though it didn't have a CEL I kep't thinking.....I hope it'll pass.....I hope it'll pass, I hope the computer VIN jives with the plate...I hope it'll pass.

I have a scanner now and will keep it in my hip pocket tool box if I think about buying an other newer XJ.
