Default Can't find temp. sending unit

I can't find the temp sending unit as pictured in the attachment below. My fuel ignition and intake manifold are in the way and no wire seems to be leading to anything under that. Help please

I believe our temp sending unit is right on top of the thermostat housing, or are you talking about something different?

hey man....x2 Dave's picture....97+ temp sensor (which feeds the ecu) and coolant temp sending unit (which feed the temp gauge) are both in one unit that goes on top of your thermo housing....

....pre 97 high output engines had the temp sensor (for ecu) at thermo housing and coolant temp sender (for gauge) at back of engine...

Default More ideas?

Why I ask is that I have replaced the sensor on the thermostat housing but I still have an erratic gauge. When it reads that it is overheating and I sit and watch the gauge it will rapidly go back to normal temp and shortly thereafter indicate high temp. Might this be an indicator of air in the closed coolant system? Also unplugging the connector to the sensor in the thermostat housing and it has no impact on the temp gauge - it continues to operate all be it erratic. Any suggestions?

It could indicate air in the cooling system, squeeze the top radiator hose when it is cool and you should be able to feel that there is water in it. Try the same thing when it starts to warm up. Be careful mine gets very hot fast. Also, now any time i change the thermostat in a closed cooling system i drill two small holes in the thermostat at 12 and 6 o'clock. the system will then burp itself.

This makes me think that there probably inst any air in your cooling system but your gauge may be bad. In my 2000 if i unplug the temp sensor my CEL comes on and my gauge is dead. i haven't seen what you are describing when the temp sensor is unplugged. I would try to trace that wire down and inspect it make sure there are no exposed stripped wires anywhere on that wire. also pay attention to the connector, sometimes the wires on there tend to fray and if the frayed wire was touching the other one intermittently that could also cause your problem.

sorry for the long winded response, i hope this helps you out.
