Default cant figure this one out. help.

Okay so while the jeep is on and in R D 3 or 1 2 there is a noise heard from inside the cabin that goes away when in park or neutral. It comes on gradually when shifted into those gears. I can describe it almost like a bubbling noise but its not liquid its definately parts making the noise. Its not in sync with the engine noise or consistent as like an engine tick, sparatic and random sound. As in no pattern. Ideas?

Got some junk rattling around? Can you hear it from outside, say, under the hood?

When not in park or neutral, the trans is driving the transfer case, which may be making the noise.

Check the fluid level in your TC and/or change it.

Crawl under the Heep and see if the exhaust pipe is rubbing on top of the crossmember. See if the hole in the rubber isolator for the pipe hanger is elongated, allowing the pipe to hang down to the point it rubs on the trans crossmember.

My "98 Expedition did this. The noise sounded like it was coming from where the engine and transmission mated up.

Very long story short, it ended up that a circlip had broken loose inside the trans, sending shrapnel everywhere.

The transmission AND the power steering pump had to be rebuilt. Vehicle had 43,000 miles on it. Out of warranty. $2700.
