My after market stereo only works with the ignition on, I checked the accessory fuse and it isn't blown.
Many years ago I was told that leaving the ignition on with the engine turned off will burn out the coil and cause all sorts of terrible things to happen
On modern cars is it safe to have the ignition on to listen to the radio while parked ?.

I wired a Pioneer 3400UB using an adapter that plugs into the existing factory harness. The adapter comes with color coded wires that you splice into the wires from the stereo plug. Any wires not used (in my case, just the dimmer ones) can be taped up and left alone. My system works when I put it on accessory. I recommend doing this. The adapter is only about $10 on average. On amazon you can find them pretty cheap. I used a "Scosche JE01B 1989-97 JEEP/EAGLE Car Stereo Connector." Check with amazon to make sure the part fits your XJ and also check with Scosche. I think they can be bought at Walmart too. Just make sure it fits before you use it. The original harnesses change through the years. Good luck!

You do realize it is no different than than the vehicle running? When its running it's still in the ignition on position.
Only way something like that will burn up is if the connections are corroded

mine had no corrosion, and I have seen this problem creep up in forum before , the box just overheats. It only seems to be a RENIX problem though

Nothing works when the switch is in ACC, the wiring is all messed up I'm gradually sorting things out.
There was no radio in it but it had the after market harness that another poster mentioned.
I'll get round to fitting a wire direct from the battery to the stereo, I didn't realise the fuel pump was on with the ignition
