here's the comment i was referring to.
I run my oil to 15,000 miles, changing the filter and topping off every 5,000 in between. The pH gets funky at longer intervals in most engines.

The only way this is even close to ok is if your running amsoil...
It wouldnt hurt to swap the filter in between changes. The whole goal is to filter out the impurities....
Even amsoil suggests swapping out the filter in heavy use situations. Then keeping the oil. Oh, and you cant tell if oil has lost its viscosity unless you send it to a lab...

Just don't fix whatever oil leak you most likely have and park it over a catch pan (to save your driveway) then keep topping it off with fresh stuff. Basically changes itself.

Well, as long as I'm here...
Ideal oil change intervals depend a lot on how you use the vehicle. Towing or crawling is going to be different from highway miles.
But there is a very good scientific way to find out exactly how long you can go between changes: Send samples off to Blackstone for analysis and request a TBN on each test. If you request a TBN, Blackstone will tell you whether the oil can go longer, and they'll usually even give you a suggested interval for the next change. If you start at 5000 miles, they might tell you to try 7000 next time. If your 7000 change comes back with a good TBN, they might tell you to try 10,000.
You'll not only know whether your oil and engine can handle the longer oil changes, but you'll also get a lot of information about what's going on in your engine, and you'll likely detect problems before they turn into major damage.

Engine oil lasts a lot more than 3k miles. Plenty has change in the last 30 or so years since that came about. How much more is engine- and oil-dependent.
