yes you can run syn for 5000 miles
i worked at a toyota lube place when i was younger and under the hood of most pickups it recommended changing the conventional oil every 5000 under extreme conditions and 7000 under normal....i say this is crazy

Its OK to run it 7500-9000 miles if you are not encountering "rough service" conditions.
Oil doesn't wear out so that it doesn't lubricate anymore. It gets contaminated by blowby and acids formed in the crankcase. A good filter will trap most of the particles.
I imagine I will get some posters challenging me on this, but it is true.

only thing i will challange you on is the fact that the conditioners and detergents that clean the oil do wear out.....it has been proven that after 3 months they start to deteriorate. once they wear out the already dirty filter will have to do all the work.
i change mine every 3000 just for peace of mind!!!!!

I change mine every 3 months or 3,000 miles. 3 months usually comes first, though.
My Jeep owner's manual says to get an oil change every 7500 miles.

I was thinking of switching to the Rotella 5w40 full syn for the low temp rating and the high temp rating., in theory 0w-50 would be the best cause it protects way cold and hot temps. But I noticed that its not rated fro as many gas engine specs as the valvoline im running, but since this new info about running it for 5-6k I might check into some royal purp. or castrol edge since I will be Changing it less....

I run my oil to 15,000 miles, changing the filter and topping off every 5,000 in between. The pH gets funky at longer intervals in most engines.

On newer vehicles that "tell you" when you need to change the oil, they trac starts/stops/driving conditions/rpms/etc. Its a ton of data that is supposed to gage how much oil wear/consumption you have. These are for dino oil as well. A friend of mine had 9500 miles on his GM Trailblazer in this fashion with normal driving. That being said, if I were you, I would change the oil and use a quality filter at 5000 mi intervals with full syn oil. Maybe 4000 if you are really making it work. 5000 is good piece of mind. Most def check your oil level and cleanliness between changes. If you have a good valve cover leak you can go longer because you add fresh oil at 2500 miles (dont ask how i know...)
