Default Can I remove this ?

1997 4.0
What is this Bubble in my Exhaust and can I Cut it out ?
Probably an expansion chamber, but is it necassary ?
I am trying to replace my Trans Solenoids and this will not let
the Pan drop.
I can not move the Exhaust forward or back without cutting it, so I have to cut the Exhaust on the side of the trans so I can get a cuppler on it to reinstall it.
But if I cut that Bubble out and install the same size tube, the Pan would come out.
I do live in California and have to Smog.

No you can not. It is part of the emission system and is against federal regulations to alter the system. Especially in California, you will fail inspection without it.

You may fail a visual inspection if the inspector knows that it should be there but im willing to bet that is just a resonator. Just a hollow can to help quiet the exhaust that most likely has no impact on emissions at all.

Can you remove it? Yes, you can.

Should you remove it? No, you should not.

How about removing the crossmember and unbolting the exhaust at the manifold? That might give you enough room???

I'm in cali, and I've never seen such a thing.
Do you already have a cat? (further down the line)
Then you could remove that "thing"
Hell, if in doubt, get a new cat installed when you cut up your exhaust.
I don't know why everyone gets so exited over this subject
("ohhh he's breaking the law, lets get 'em")
Most of us break a law almost every day.
Don't believe me? when was the last time you got a speeding ticket?
Or drank at a bar, and walked outside that bar? (public intoxication)
I'm not condoning lawlessness, but this is an area of judgment thats best left to the owner of the vehicle.

All that being said:
Everyone needs a cat.....bottom line. So just make sure you have one on there.
BTW, just for the record; my cat is there, I never touch it!
Doesn't matter if its not working right? I wont touch it for fear of the wrath of the man.
(and Al gore)

OK:
Well I didn't have to cut anything after all.
After taking alittle time to assess the situation better.
I realized that my TC drop was binding up the entire exhaust system.
I removed the TC drop and put the TC back up where it should be and the exhaust was able to be moved out of the way without cutting it.
So now I must install a H&T SYE, which I was going to do anyway, just didn't want to have to do it right now.

not to poke... but not every single person will get the long arm of the law if they dont have a cat.. most people will, but where i live the population is so small that we dont even have emissions. i have never had emission tests once in my life. the only regulation we have on exhaust is for the loudness of it. as long as it aint killin no ones ears they dont really care what you do or dont have underneath your vehicle..

In California, you have to have an emissions test every 2 years, it's a requirement for renewing the registration.

I am never moving to a state with emissions tests. And I hope they don't start doing them here where I live. There is no way I could afford having a car if emissions testing came here. Its all I can do to just keep the Jeep fueled up.

I guess I will make this very clear we have a standing rule we do not discuss any illegal modification or wheeling on this site. Do folks break laws sure, have I sure will I in the future probably. Although on here you won't catch me discussing anything illegal.

I really do not appreciate the snide comments some are making and the lack of respect for the site rules and how we run the site. If you don't like the rules don't come here it's that simple. If you want to be apart of the community follow the rules and keep the smart remarks to yourself. I am quite frankly sick and tired of the childish attitude and complete lack of respect for the site and those who run the site. So mark this as a warning next time you **** me off your in time out. Don't like it tough go somewhere else.
