I have the fuel sending unit that has the fuel pressure regulator on the inside of the tank. Jeep only used this crap in 96 and it is impossible to find a replacement.

So I just noticed the 97 tank and sending unit looks like a return-less system as well. Has anyone replaced their 96 tank and sending unit/regulator with another year to fix this problem of not being able to get parts?

Found this info about the injectors:

What I have read and learn. 96 is a specific part and is only for that year.

 

What i'm talking about is replacing the fuel tank and the straps, sending unit with regulator on top. I want to get those parts from a 97 and put them in my 96.

Seems like a straight swap since they both have return less fuel systems and the regulator is on the pump assembly and not on the fuel rail.

 

Ohh got it. I'm not sure about. That because I believe that the tanks are of slightly different shapes but it may work. I'm just not sure

 

Yeah. I can't imagine they changed the place where the tank goes, but the straps are different from 1997-2001 cause of the tank shape.

I mainly want to see if anyone else had thought of this swap to get rid of the 1996 fuel system "mistake" that Jeep made.

SeriousOffroad thanks for the info, but my fuel pressure regulator is bad, and it's in the tank as part of the assembly. They do not sell it separate from the assembly. But now, they are no longer manufacturing the assembly either.

You can get fuel pump sending unit assemblies all day long for 1997. I just want to be in that group. LOL

And yes, i know the regulator is bad.

 

Not sure it will fit but if you have a 2 in. hitch it will not bolt back on. It interferes with the tank due to it being a diff shape. A 1 in. hitch will work.
You can also use a ZJ gas skid on a '97 tank. Just redrill the hole to match the XJ trailer hitch pattern.

 

Your regulator is on the fuel rail.

 

 

SeriousOffroad in some cases, they put the regulator at the tank. Some in 96 are actually in the tank, horrible idea. Other models have them right on the top of the fuel assembly outside the tank.

OK, so i put the plastic 97-01 gas tank and the sending unit (rebuilt with bosch pump) in my 96 XJ. The fuel pressure is great and it starts and runs OK.

I am getting a "stumbling" sometimes at low (RPM) speeds like 35 MPH....i'm not sure what that is.

Anyway, my real question now is that my fuel gauge does not work. The wires for the 97 sending unit did not match up to the 96 plug.

Has anyone rewired the 96 harness to plug in a 97-01 sending unit and have the fuel gauge work. I need to figure out which wires will allow the gauge to work.
