so im thinking about taking the rear drive shaft so i can see if that would be the cause of the vibration i have.....i know i could drive it without the front one,,,,,so the question is if i can drive it without the rear one? thanks guys

 

im pretty sure you will be okay, but wait for someone else to confirm/deny.

You can, but you need to have a SYE or some other method of stopping the tranny fluid from coming out when you pull out the slip yoke.

 

Yea, if you have a way for the tranny to not leak you would be fine.

ok what are you guys talking about having to tap or plug off the output to the rear drivshaft..
if it is leaking due to the fact that your taking the D/S out your seal is gone and you need to replace it wial you have the d/s out..
it is simple take the cone off 3 bolts and put a new 2$ seal in then replace the cone and top up the t-case with fluid...
when you take the cone of please note that that is when the fuild will come out of t-case and is the only time you should have fluid comming out of that part of the t-case as the cone hold the seal around the output shaft.
I have taken lots of d/s out and have run many a jeep just on front driveshaft for one reason or another.. they do not leak inless the seal is no good or the cone is broken and the seal is now longer tight becasue cone is broken...
if it leaks when you take out the D/s it leaks when its in so play safe and smart replace the seal before your t-case runs low on fuid and overheats and blows up leaving up on the road or in the woods being towed home

 

please post a link or past my post to the other thread for people that do not know that if their rear seal is gone they should replace it.

I broke my rear shaft on a trail once and used the top to a large gatorade and duck tape to hold in in place. The cap on the gatorade bottle is a perfect fit and snugs up nicely to the seal. Never leaked a drop for 3 weeks while I repaired my driveshaft, even while driving it around town.
