i get a pretty strong knocking while driving my 96 cherokee sport. i can feel it through the floor. it comes in a rhythm, but at irregular times. it doesnt seem to matter if im accelerating smooth or hard although when its happening, letting off the gas does seem to lessen it, sometimes it goes away completely. it does it from a dead stop and in every gear.

i put it up on stands and tried to replicate it. this was the only reaction i got by tapping the gas.

any ideas? i cant see anything external moving around or hitting, so im guessing its internal of the transmission or t case :/

its got around 128k, this problem developed about 3-4 weeks ago and is only getting worse. i tried to pinpoint the source of the noise, and it does sound like its right around the t case

I went back and was playing with the driveshaft by hand (diiirty), and i noticed a lot of play when rotating back and forth. Backlash i think its called? I thought that was normal, and i dont think its causing my problem.
