Camshaft sensor
I have 90 XJ with an incurable stalling issue, haha. Anyway I have checked or changed all the obvious stuff except the camshaft sensor. Could that be the culprit, it looks like a pretty involved procedure in a renix to change?

If you suspect the CPS (cam pos sens) then you will most definitely have a code for it. Check your codes.
Since you want to be a Renix owner, follow these procedures ---> https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/jee...di-obdii-3341/
After that take two Advil and call me in the morning.

I don't have a scanner, probably a big problem for me, but I had a mechanic tell me the info you get in those early model years is sorta vague anyway.

I'm sure someone else on here knows what it might be even if you don't know what the code means.

I will have to take it somewhere to get codes read. I'll post what I find out. By the way, is there a specific code for the cam sensor you know off hand?

No. I have OBDII. I also have an actron scanner. You can go to a parts store and borrow theirs for free, such as Autozone or Advance.

The Renix control system is "pre-OBD," and therefore does not have a "Check Engine Lamp". It also does not "store" or "throw" Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) or "Parameter IDs" (PIDs) - see: OBD-II PIDs.[5] This is a common problem at vehicle inspection, particularly in California and other jurisdictions with emission standards. Most inspection stations are not aware and will try to explain that the CEL/MIL "doesn't work" (note: there may be a cutout for it, but no bulb). It is recommended that the inspection technician be shown the "OBD Exempt" federal emissions label (located under the hood) and/or have the factory service manual as a reference to avoid this problem

Pretty sure your right Gee oh Dee, just talk to a mechanic and he said the same, it doesn't store codes and with no check engine light on it won't tell us anything.

Have you replaced the crank position sensor?
The cam position sensor is also known as a pickup coil, and is really easy to change. If you replace it, inspect the rotor and cap if you haven't replaced those.
The crank position sensor is a pain, though. I hope its solved by the cam sensor.

I have replaced the crank sensor. The cam sensor in mine is the kind you have to pull the distributor out and disassemble it in order to change it. I know some are very easy. Also, I'm actually on my third crank sensor in about 7months. First one I put in, the wire melted because I didn't route correctly. Second one I just replaced last night, and it runs smoother but still stalls.

Just undo the two hold down bolts, leave all the wires attached. Lift off the cap exposing the rotor, take note of the rotor's position. Lift off the rotor and gently pry upward around all sides of the black disk. be careful around the bottom side of the plastic where the wires come into the sensor.
